BookExpo America--or, BEA as it is known by book publishing insiders--is an international publishing industry-only event.

What happens at BookExpo America?

BookExpo America marks the launch of book publishers Fall list of titles--generally the biggest and most robust book list of the year. For publishers, BookExpo America's primary function is to showcase those upcoming books in order to get them in front of those who want to buy and/or promote them: the thousands of booksellers who attend; libraries and school systems; foreign publishers; producers and other members of the media.

BEA, like the expos and conferences for any business, also gives booksellers and other book publishing professionals the opportunity to learn what's happening in the book industry. This happens both formally during panels and conference sessions as well as informally, through meeting and mingling with their book brethren.

What does BookExpo America look like?

The official BEA conference is typically comprised of:
  • About 1,300+ publisher and book-related exhibits - these include areas for publishers, international publishers, suppliers who provide ancillary products to booksellers (mugs, tee shirts), etc.
  • An area where hundreds of authors sign galleys or ARCs - the signings are specifically for booksellers, so that they get to meet the authors and get advance copies in order to preview the fall books they'll be selling
  • Other author appearances - including very popular Book and Author Breakfasts, as well as in-booth appearances.
  • Conference sessions and panels related to bookselling and the book publishing business.
  • A subsidiary rights area in which book rights are bought and sold.
  • Meeting rooms where book business (for example, international book sales, etc.) is conducted.
In addition to official BookExpo America events, publishers often throw book parties or host bookseller dinners in order to take advantage of the critical mass of bookselling customers and authors flocking to the same city at the same time.
