  Online Newsletter Publishing
"I publish a paper newsletter that I want to take online. I'd like to make it something nice to look at though, not just words on a screen. I'm begnning to think it's as simple as producing a page and posting it on a web site, but I don't really know." --SHEILAVG

There are many avenues to pursue if you'd like a career in the newsletter industry. You could start your own newsletter publishing company, work for an established publisher, or maybe even find your place in the emerging electronic publishing field.

On Your Own

According to the folks at the Newsletter Publishers Association (NPA), opportunities abound in the newsletter publishing field. A publisher with one or two newsletters can make a comfortable living at it... though not without effort!

The people most likely to start their own newsletters are journalists who will find a niche and learn about it to create their newsletters; and people who are already experts in their field, who already know all about their topics, and just have to learn how to write, edit and produce their newsletters.

Subscription charges for newsletters can range anywhere from $25 a year to over $600 per year (generally for construction, energy and other industry newsletters).

Newsletter Journalism

If you're about to graduate from a journalism program and you think that newsletter journalism isn't worth looking into, the Newsletter Publishers Foundation has posted a few facts that might change your mind. According to statistics gathered by Ohio State University, graduates who pursue newsletter journalism, after one year of experience, have the highest salaries of any other news medium.

If that little fact has piqued your interest, you can request a free career guide from the Newsletter Publishers Foundation by writing to Newsletter Publishers Foundation, 1501 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 509, Arlington, Virginia 22209; or by emailing pwysocki@newsletters.org.

Newsletter Production

Looking for a position in the graphic arts/production department? Brush up on your knowledge of Quark Xpress, the page layout software of choice for most newsletter publishers. A solid knowledge of Adobe Pagemaker is also required of employment seekers in McKinley's production department.

Electronic Publishing

Electronic publishing is one of the biggest trends in the industry today, and one of the hottest job opportunities. It's hard to find people to fill these essential jobs because they require such diversity in experience and knowledge.

Mitchel Harad of NewslettersOnline says that the people needed to fill these postitions should have knowledge of both the publishing industry and the Web, especially e-commerce. "Our dream candidate would have a very solid understanding of the Web with a good eye for trends," Harad said, "They need to know both e-commerce and the content business. In addition, publishing experience would be awesome, but these three things together are hard to find."
