America's Super Librarian--and author, speaker, and TV- and radio personality--Nancy Pearl got a little love this week in the form of the title of "Librarian of the Year," awarded by Library Journal.
According to the announcement, Pearl was so honored because "Her work has reinforced reading via libraries as essential and empowering for all people... Her public outreach has effectively promoted libraries well beyond library walls, broadening the public's perception of the purpose of libraries."
Pearl's illustrious book- and library-centric career includes stints at Detroit and Tulsa Public Libraries, and she is a former executive director of Seattle Public Library's (SPL) Washington Center for the Book.
And, while the Nancy Pearl Librarian Action Figure has "shushing" motion capability, there's just no shushing the real live one. Retired in 2004, she continues her passionate advocacy of books and libraries with workshops, her Book Lust series of books, a monthly Book Lust television show, NPR guest spots and... tweets.
